Turkish powerhouse Beşiktaş and Danish side FC Midtjylland are squaring off at Tüpraş Stadium in Istanbul for the first leg of the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round. For Canadian football fans keeping tabs on European continental action, this match serves as a high-stakes kickoff for both clubs' 2026-27 European campaigns. Both teams are looking to establish an early edge ahead of next week's return leg in Denmark.
What Is Happening
Beşiktaş and FC Midtjylland are meeting in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League qualifying tie. The fixture marks the first competitive head-to-head meeting between the two clubs. Beşiktaş enters the matchup under new leadership, while Midtjylland arrives in Istanbul buoyed by strong summer form.
The Background
Beşiktaş experienced a difficult domestic campaign last season, finishing fourth in the Turkish Süper Lig. The club has since appointed former Bologna boss Vincenzo Italiano to lead a squad overhaul. Historically, Beşiktaş has played 258 European matches, recording 97 victories, 50 draws, and 111 defeats. However, the club has failed to reach the group or league phase of a UEFA competition since 2023.
FC Midtjylland finished second in the Danish Superliga last season and won the Danish Cup. The Jutland club enjoyed a strong European run last term, advancing to the Europa League round of 16 before falling to Nottingham Forest on penalties.
The Latest Development
The match signals Vincenzo Italiano's first official game in charge of Beşiktaş. The Turkish side has brought in prominent names over the summer, including Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nübel and Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard. However, Trossard will miss the fixture after being granted extra leave following Belgium's World Cup run, while defender Felix Uduokhai is serving a suspension.
Which competition it will be, I do not know, but in every case we want to continue in Europe.
Midtjylland travels without injured forwards Mikael Uhre and Junior Brumado, while winger Aral Simsir was sold to Trabzonspor. However, forward Franculino has returned to fitness after a knee injury kept him out for four months during the 2025-26 season.
What It Means
A positive result in Istanbul is vital for both sides to set up their European ambitions. The team that advances from this second qualifying round tie will move one step closer to the Europa League phase, while the losing side faces a setback in their continental plans early in the season.
What Remains Unclear
It remains to be seen how quickly Beşiktaş can adapt to Vincenzo Italiano's tactical system given their limited time together with a complete squad. Additionally, Midtjylland's ability to cope with the hostile atmosphere at Tüpraş Stadium without key injured attackers will only be answered on the pitch.
