Mariska Hargitay's final Broadway performance took an unexpected turn when her husband, Peter Hermann, stepped into the show, dropped to one knee and staged a playful proposal. The surprise unfolded on 5 July during Hargitay's closing performance of Every Brilliant Thing at New York's Hudson Theatre. Hermann appeared as Sam, a character normally played by an audience member in the immersive one-person production. During the scene, Hargitay's narrator believes Sam has stopped to tie his shoe. Hermann instead went down on one knee and asked, "Will you marry me?" Hargitay responded in character before the couple kissed as the audience cheered.

The cameo carried an extra layer of meaning because Hargitay and Hermann are married in real life. TODAY reported that the pair met when Hermann guest-starred on the third season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, married in 2004 and have three children.

After the performance, Hargitay received a standing ovation. Hermann later returned with a large bouquet and told her he loved her, adding a personal ending to a run that had also marked a major professional first for the actor.

Hargitay made her Broadway debut in the production after taking over from Daniel Radcliffe. The play, written by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe, follows an unnamed narrator who begins recording the small and large things that make life worth living while facing family pain and deep sadness. Its unusual structure brings audience members directly into the performance to read entries and portray characters.

Hargitay's Broadway run has ended, but she is not finished with the production. She is scheduled to perform Every Brilliant Thing at the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto on 7 August at 7pm and 8 August at 2pm and 7pm, according to The Almanac.

The performances will open TheatreWorks Silicon Valley's 23rd annual New Works Festival, which runs from 7 to 16 August.
