Cinema-goers across Great Britain are experiencing a major technological upgrade as Vue rolls out advanced visual systems and sweeping venue transformations. From Scotland's first-ever EPIC screen in Livingston to extensive revamps in Romford and Essex, the cinema chain is modernising its facilities. These nationwide updates introduce state-of-the-art laser projection and luxury seating designed to redefine the standard movie-going experience.
What Sparked the Controversy
The wave of refurbishments has generated considerable public interest and discussion among film fans eager to monitor how regional venues will manage temporary closures and phased upgrades. With Livingston planning a temporary closure from November 30 and Lakeside scheduling a short shutdown in December, regular visitors have raised questions regarding access to current releases during the transition periods. Cinema management across these locations has addressed the community interest by outlining structured schedules to ensure venues remain operational through the majority of the works.
What Is Confirmed
Verified company announcements confirm that Scotland’s first EPIC screen has officially opened at Vue Livingston, featuring high-dynamic-range laser projection by Barco and 64-channel Dolby Atmos sound. This technology delivers up to six times the brightness of a standard cinema screen.
Similar upgrades are underway at Vue Romford in The Brewery and at the Lakeside shopping centre in West Thurrock, where nine screens and retail areas are being transformed. Furthermore, new Ultra Lux seating options—complete with independent recliners, personal tables, and beverage coolers—are being installed alongside the cutting-edge Vue Your Way self-service retail concept.
What Each Side Has Said
Local venue managers have emphasised the long-term benefits of these investments for cinemagoers. Andrew Dykes, general manager of Vue Livingston, stated:
Reaching this milestone in our refurbishment means that customers now have the chance to take a first look at some of the exciting features we are bringing to the venue.
Meanwhile, Perry Lummis, general manager at Vue Romford, highlighted the timeline for the Essex location:
Centre managers such as Stuart Wilson at The Brewery also noted that the significant investment enhances the local shopping and leisure destination. We are looking forward to unveiling our new look to customers in 2027, when they’ll be able to enjoy all of the new features including our exciting new retail space, Vue Your Way.
What Is Still Unclear
While rollout dates for initial phases have been published, specific completion timelines for every individual screen across all participating regional branches beyond the initial December milestones remain to be fully detailed. Additionally, exact pricing adjustments or membership tier changes associated with the premium Ultra Lux seating and expanded hot food ranges have not been explicitly disclosed by corporate representatives.
What Happens Next
Vue Livingston is scheduled to close temporarily from November 30 to finalise its foyer transformation into the Vue Your Way retail format. Similarly, Vue Lakeside will implement a brief closure from December 9, reopening at 5:00 PM on December 15 to unveil its first phase of works. The nationwide project across participating venues is slated for continued phased rollouts, leading toward full completion throughout 2027.
