14-Year Wait Ends as Air Zimbabwe Restores Gatwick Flights

Direct flights between London and Harare are returning after a 14-year absence, with Air Zimbabwe confirming a three-times-weekly service from 22 July 2026. Air Zimbabwe says flights will depart Harare on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Return services will leave Gatwick's South Terminal on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, creating three weekly round trips between the UK and Zimbabwe.

The route will be flown with a 302-seat Airbus A330-300 supplied by Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas. The published configuration includes 30 business-class seats and 272 economy seats. Plus Ultra will provide the aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance, while the service operates commercially under Air Zimbabwe's flight code.

The operating structure matters because Air Zimbabwe remains on the UK Air Safety List and the European Union Air Safety List, preventing it from flying its own aircraft into UK or EU airspace. Using an aircraft and crew from the EU-certified Spanish operator allows the route to return while meeting the applicable operational and safety requirements.

Air Zimbabwe previously served London with Boeing 767 aircraft before suspending the route in 2012 amid financial pressure, fleet shortages and operational difficulties. Travellers have since relied mainly on connecting flights through African and Middle Eastern hubs. Promotional fares are listed from £490 one way and £675 return for journeys beginning in London, subject to availability and booking conditions.

Chapman Freeborn arranged the ACMI capacity and contract structure connecting Air Zimbabwe with Plus Ultra. Its regional president said the project responds to demand for flexible aircraft capacity as African airlines rebuild international networks without immediately adding their own long-haul fleets.
